Filter rule: A short list for a first stake: rated Reliable (70+), no red flags, inflation commission of 7% or less, not flagged Very large or Superminority, and at least 30 epochs of history.

Picking your first Solana validator is easier with a short list than with hundreds of names. This list applies the same public checks to every validator for you. Each one is rated Reliable (a Score of 70 or more), has no red flags, charges an inflation commission (the cut it keeps from your rewards) of 7% or less, and has at least 30 epochs of history (an epoch lasts about a day, so roughly a month). Validators flagged Very large (among the largest validators by stake) or Superminority (the group of top validators that together hold a third of all stake) are left out, because too much stake in a few hands weakens the network.

It is a starting point, not a recommendation. The list is sorted by Score, which follows one public formula and does not know your goals, so the order is not a ranking of who is best for you. Open two or three validators and compare their fees, their uptime over the last 90 days and their rewards over the last 30 days. Rewards are variable and never guaranteed.

Your SOL stays in your own stake account whichever validator you pick, and you can switch later. If a validator goes offline you earn less, but it cannot take your SOL, and no slashing (a penalty that cuts stake) has been switched on in Solana so far.
